National Girls and Women in Sports Day began in 1987, its purpose to acknowledge the accomplishments of female athletes, the positive influence of sports participation, and the continuing struggle for equality for women in sports. Austin College will be recognizing its women in sports at the 'Roo softball team's home opening doubleheader against Southwest Assemblies of God on Friday, February 3, as well as the women's tennis team's first home match of the season against Texas Wesleyan on February 11. Finally, the women's basketball team will be celebrating NGWSD on Sunday, February 12 as the 'Roos take on Schreiner University in their final home game of the season.
This year, NGWSD is celebrating the theme of Expanding Opportunity, and building on the progress made through Title IX to provide chances for young women to compete in sports.
