SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College community is saddened to learn of the passing of former 'Roo baseball coach Carl Iwasaki, who coached the program for six seasons, on February 7. Iwasaki was 62-years-old.
"We're heartbroken to learn of Carl's passing," said athletics director David Norman. "He was a generous and kind man, with an infectious positive energy that helped him to make a lasting impact on all who were fortunate enough to have known him, and especially on the young student-athletes he worked with on a daily basis. Carl was a tremendous baseball coach, and an even better person who will be dearly missed. Our thoughts are with his family."
Iwasaki earned 103 coaching victories during his time as the program's head coach, including 22 during a 2007 campaign in which he led the 'Roos to a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament, marking the first time in program history for each of those achievements. In his six years as Austin College's head coach, he was twice named his conference's Coach of the Year -- first as the American Southwest Conference winner in 2006, followed by earning that same honor in the SCAC in 2007.
Iwasaki won 44 conference games during his time at Austin College, while coaching 11 players to All-ASC recognition, 16 to All-SCAC honors, and two of his players were named All-West Region. Iwasaki left the 'Roos following the 2010 season to become the head coach at his alma mater, NCAA Division I program Northern Colorado.
