SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College baseball team earned a dramatic walk-off victory in non-conference play against Howard Payne on Tuesday evening at Baker Field, with Mason Woodhouse delivering an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to lift the 'Roos to a 6-5 victory. Austin College is now 10-22 overall on the year.
Austin College jumped out to a big lead early, plating five runs in the opening frame. Tino Ramirez came home for the first run of the game, and Woodhouse blasted a grand slam later in the inning to make it 5-0. Those would be the only runs of the game for the 'Roos until the bottom of the ninth, however, while Howard Payne began to chip away at the margin with three runs in the top of the second before tying things up with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. Neither team was able to get on the board in the eighth, and after the Jackets got a runner in scoring position in the top of the ninth, the Austin College defense managed to keep HPU off the scoreboard.
The 'Roos got Desmond Squalls to second base in the bottom of the ninth, and Woodhouse managed to rip a single just over the HPU second baseman and into the gap in right-center, with Squalls easily beating the throw to the plate for the winning run. Blake Skipworth got the win in relief for Austin College, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings with one hit allowed, while Brendan Read took the loss for HPU after giving up the winning run. Woodhouse finished 3-for-5 with five RBI, and Ramirez was also 3-for-5 in the victory. Colby Chapman was 2-for-5 with three RBI to pace Howard Payne at the dish.
