Austin College is now 10-23 overall and 6-19 in conference play.
Trystan Mallory took a perfect game into the sixth before finally allowing a base runner with a walk, and the senior carried his no-hitter into the seventh, leaving the game with a 3-1 lead after seven innings of work. However, the Pirates quickly evened things up and would eventually take the lead on a wild pitch. Southwestern continued to push runs across in the bottom of the eighth before Austin College was finally able to get out of the inning trailing by eight runs, and the 'Roos were unable to mount a comeback in their final set of at-bats.
Austin College had taken its early lead with an RBI from Jack Wilhelm in the top of the first, followed by an RBI single by Mason Woodhouse in the fourth. Tino Ramirez brought home the third run of the game in the fifth to make it 3-0, but that's where the scoring ended for the 'Roos, who left 11 runners on base in the loss compared to just three for the Pirates. Mallory got a no-decision after pitching 7.0 innings of one-hit ball with one run allowed and seven strikeouts, while Brant Stuber took the loss, giving up eight runs, seven earned, on five hits in 0.1 innings of work in relief. Chase McGarr got the win for Southwestern, while Austin College was led offensively by Jayden Ayala-Hinojosa, who was 3-for-5, and Desmond Squalls, who went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Austin College and Southwestern finish up their series on Sunday, as they'll play a twinbill beginning at 1:00 p.m.
