'Roos Fall to No. 25 Texas Lutheran
SEGUIN, Texas - The Austin College baseball team fought back from an early deficit but ultimately fell 11-8 to Texas Lutheran on Saturday at Katt-Isbel Field. The 'Roos tallied 10 hits in the contest, led by multi-hit performances from Jayden Ayala-Hinojosa, Desmond Squalls, and Carlos Michinaux.
SEGUIN, Texas - The Austin College baseball team fought back from an early deficit but ultimately fell 11-8 to Texas Lutheran on Saturday at Katt-Isbel Field. The 'Roos tallied 10 hits in the contest, led by multi-hit performances from Jayden Ayala-Hinojosa, Desmond Squalls, and Carlos Michinaux.
Texas Lutheran jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings, but the 'Roos responded with a three-run third. Ayala-Hinojosa put Austin College on the board with an RBI double down the left field line that scored Desmond Squalls and Kaden Stegent. Keaton Bradshaw added an RBI single up the middle later in the frame to cut the deficit to 4-3.
The home team extended its lead with a three-run third inning and two more runs in the fifth. Caleb Small paced the Texas Lutheran offense, going 3-for-3 with a double, a triple, four runs scored, and two runs batted in. Aiden Spires also contributed heavily for the hosts, tallying three RBI on the day.
Austin College struck for three more runs in the top of the sixth inning. After a wild pitch allowed Cayd Miller to score, Squalls delivered a two-run single to center field, bringing home Caleb Staggs and Xander Hansen to make it a 9-6 game.
Texas Lutheran pushed two runs across in the seventh before the 'Roos answered one last time in the eighth. Ayala-Hinojosa ripped his second double of the game, a two-run shot to right-center that plated Hansen and Staggs, finalizing the score at 11-8.
Ayala-Hinojosa finished 2-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI to lead the Austin College offense. Squalls went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Michinaux added a 2-for-4 effort at the plate. Gavin Brady took the loss on the mound for the 'Roos, allowing three runs on three hits in one inning of work. Triston McGowan earned the win for Texas Lutheran, striking out four batters over 5.2 innings.
