SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College men's soccer team found itself trailing 2-0 with just four and a half minutes left, but two goals in an 88-second span leveled things and helped the 'Roos earn a 2-2 draw against visiting Texas Lutheran University on Friday evening at the Dr. Jack R. Pierce Memorial Soccer Complex. The 'Roos are now 1-3-2 overall and 0-0-1 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.
Texas Lutheran controlled possession throughout the opening frame, firing nine shots while holding the 'Roos without an attempt in the first 45 minutes. The Bulldogs put three shots on target in the first half, but Patrick Bassett was able to turn TLU away on each attempt to keep it scoreless heading into the break.
The game remained scoreless until the 62:21 mark, when Evan Bremauntz broke through with a goal for the Bulldogs, and that's how things would remain until late in the half when Jesus Carrillo scored on a feed from Evan Pacheco at the 85:26 mark to make it a 2-0 game and seemingly put the game away. However, just 17 seconds later, Sam Spencer finished a cross from Luis Garza-Rios to cut the deficit in half, and just 1:11 after that, Austin College earned a penalty kick and Garza-Rios was able to finish to even the score at 2-2.
That's the way things would end, as Texas Lutheran ended the game with a 24-3 shot advantage, including 10-3 in shots on goal, but Bassett and the Austin College defense were able to help the 'Roos earn a point in the SCAC standings with the draw. Bassett finished with eight saves, while Ernesto Avila made one stop for the Bulldogs. Austin College is back on the pitch on Sunday in another home conference game against Concordia Texas at 2:00 p.m.
