SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College women's basketball team got off to a slow start and found themselves trailing Schreiner 30-29 at halftime, but the No. 18-ranked 'Roos outscored the Mountaineers 42-18 in the second half to earn a 71-48 victory. The 'Roos are now 12-0 overall and 5-0 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.
The 'Roos took a 16-15 lead after the opening quarter, but knocked down just 4-of-18 shots in the second quarter as Schreiner grabbed the lead heading into the locker room. Austin College, which entered the game leading the SCAC in team three point shooting percentage, were 0-of-10 from long distance in the first half. Austin College started to pull away in the third quarter, limiting Schreiner to 5-of-19 shooting in the frame to take a 45-40 lead heading into the fourth, and the 'Roos would outscore Schreiner 26-8 in the fourth to ice the victory.
Austin College knocked down 5-of-8 from deep in the second half, including 4-of-7 in the fourth quarter and added a 10-of-12 performance at the free throw line to pull away down the stretch. Reagan Chiaverini drilled a pair of threes in the fourth, scoring eight of her 17 points in that frame, and Sarah Gwin and Natalie McCoy combined for 13 points in the final frame. McCoy finished the game with 17 points, hitting 10-of-11 free throw attempts, and Gwin added 15. Ally Longaker recorded a double-double in the victory, scoring 10 points and grabbing a team-best 10 rebounds.
The 'Roos finished the game shooting just 32.8% from the field and 27.8% from long distance, but outscored Schreiner 26-to-1 from the free throw line and limited the Mountaineers to 30% shooting from the floor and a 5-of-27 performance from deep. Josline Hernandez scored 12 to lead Schreiner, and Sydney Williams added 10 points and 11 rebounds.
