SHERMAN, Texas - The Austin College men's soccer team stunned the University of St. Thomas with a goal less than two minutes in and never looked back, topping the Celts 2-0 on Friday night at the Dr. Jack R. Pierce Memorial Soccer Complex. It's the first conference loss of the season for UST, while Austin College improves to 4-4-2 overall and 3-1-1 in SCAC play.
Austin College wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as Marco Guzman played a ball across the box to a streaking Max Mundorff, who buried his shot in the back of the net to make it 1-0 just 1:52 into the action. The lead doubled just over 20 minutes later, this time with Mundorff on the assisting end of the tally with Jay Facundo punching one home to make it 2-0 at the 23:04 mark. That would end up being the last goal of the game, with St. Thomas out-shooting the 'Roos 8-6 in the first half but firing 20 shots in the second frame compared to three for Austin College.
The 'Roos clamped down defensively in the game's second half, with goalkeeper Patrick Bassett making six of his seven saves after halftime. The shutout was Bassett's third clean sheet of the season and second in the last three games. Jorge Gonzalez made two saves for the Celts in the loss. Austin College is back on the pitch on Sunday, as they head to Shreveport to take on Centenary in another SCAC contest.
