'Roos Sweep Day One of MPSF East Weekend
NORTON, Mass. - The Austin College men's water polo team picked up a pair of big MPSF East Division victories on Saturday, as the 'Roos took on Connecticut College and Washington & Jefferson on the first day of a two-day conference event hosted by Wheaton College. The 'Roos topped CC 14-12, before earning a dominant 22-8 win over the Presidents to improve to 6-7 overall and 4-2 in MPSF play.
NORTON, Mass. - The Austin College men's water polo team picked up a pair of big MPSF East Division victories on Saturday, as the 'Roos took on Connecticut College and Washington & Jefferson on the first day of a two-day conference event hosted by Wheaton College. The 'Roos topped CC 14-12, before earning a dominant 22-8 win over the Presidents to improve to 6-7 overall and 4-2 in MPSF play.
The first game of the day was a back-and-forth affair between Austin College and the Camels, with the 'Roos falling behind 3-1 after the opening quarter before exploding for six goals in the second to head into the break leading 7-5. Both teams scored three times in the third, making it 10-8 entering the final frame, and Connecticut College managed to even things up at 12 goals apiece with 3:30 left to play. However, Aidan Wade tallied with 3:04 left to put Austin College on top for good, with Matthew Leeworthy firing in an insurance goal with 1:25 to play to seal the win.
Greyson Gaworecki led Austin College with five goals, adding a pair of drawn exclusions, and Owen Altermatt had two goals and a pair of assists. Leeworthy scored twice and had an assist, while Wade and Carlos Camarena each added two goals and Sebastian Scheier added one. Jack Stack led the way with seven assists in the win, adding a pair of steals, and Caleb Maddox stopped five shots in goal splitting time with Jordan Pomier, who had two steals.
The 'Roos started slow against Washington & Jefferson, falling behind 3-2 early before ending the opening quarter with a 4-3 advantage, but a 5-1 second quarter gave Austin College some breathing room at 9-4 going into halftime, and a seven goal third period made it 16-7 entering the final quarter. Austin College cruised from there, putting six more shots into the back of the cage to come away with the 22-8 win.
Wade paced the 'Roos with five goals in the victory, adding an assist and two steals, and Preston Fiala scored four times and had two drawn exclusions. Gaworecki, Camarena, and Josh Nelms each had two goals, while Nicholas Scheier, Stack, Altermatt, Leeworthy, Bates, Jonah Daley, and Justin Gonzalez each scored once. Maddox and Pomier both had four saves while sharing time in the cage.
Austin College wraps up the weekend on Sunday with games against Johns Hopkins and the host school Wheaton.
