'Roos Sweep Day Two of CWPA Regional
WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Austin College women's water polo team wrapped up its weekend trip to Pennsylvania with a strong Sunday showing, starting with a dominant 17-8 victory over Wheaton College before downing Connecticut College 12-8 in the second game of the day, helping the 'Roos finish the weekend 3-1 at the event hosted by Washington & Jefferson.
WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Austin College women's water polo team wrapped up its weekend trip to Pennsylvania with a strong Sunday showing, starting with a dominant 17-8 victory over Wheaton College before downing Connecticut College 12-8 in the second game of the day, helping the 'Roos finish the weekend 3-1 at the event hosted by Washington & Jefferson.
Austin College controlled the action from the start against Wheaton, winning the first quarter 7-0 behind three goals from Bianca Gallegos. The margin grew to 11-1 at halftime and the 'Roos cruised from there. Sophia King, Morgan Evans, SJ Johnson, and Joslyn Dimitri each scored in the second to give Austin College its double-digit halftime cushion.
Gallegos finished with three goals to pace the 'Roos, and Dimitri finished with three as well, scoring once each in the first, second, and fourth periods. King added two goals, while McKenna Malone scored twice and Lili Clepper, Clara Koenig, Camila Diarte, Johnson, and Evans each scored once.
Dimitri had a huge game against Connecticut College to lead the 'Roos to the win, scoring nine of the team's 12 goals in the victory while Caroline Armstrong found the back of the cage twice and Koenig scored once. Austin College built a 3-1 first quarter lead over Connecticut College and pushed the margin to 7-4 at halftime, and then Dimitri scored all five of the team's goals in the third and fourth quarters to put the Camels away for good.
Austin College's lead grew to as many as five in the fourth when Dimitri tallied for the last time in the contest to make it 12-7, just before a late goal by Connecticut College to make it a 12-8 final score.
