SHERMAN, Texas – Southwestern scored two goals in a span of eight minutes overlapping the end of the first half and the start of the second, and Austin College was unable to rebound in a 3-1 loss on Friday afternoon. The loss is the first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference defeat for the 'Roos, who fall to 3-4-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Southwestern tallied first when Sean Christy headed home a corner kick by Andres Carreno-Mendes in the 18th minute of action, but Thomas Quick evened things up for Austin College at the 31:00 mark when he beat his defender and blasted a shot into the back of the net to make it a 1-1 game.
However, the Pirates would score just before halftime when Brett Berdinsky scored on a free kick with 20 seconds left before the break to make it a 2-1 Southwestern lead at halftime, and in the 53rd minute the Pirates would add another goal from Christy to push it to a 3-1 game. Austin College had several opportunities to get back into the game late but were turned away by the Southwestern defense.
The 'Roos held a 16-15 edge in shots for the game, but the Pirates held a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Austin College will be looking to bounce back on Sunday when they host another SCAC foe, Texas Lutheran University.
